Are You Taking Your Vacation Time?

Summer is upon us and that means sun, outdoor activities, and vacations to exotic destinations! Ahh, time for a little R&R, right?

You’ve saved up your vacation time and you’re ready for a break, but can you get away from the office?

According to “One in Four Feel Unable to Take Vacation” by Stephen Miller, CEBS, demanding work schedules and financial difficulties are keeping some U.S. employees from taking their cherished vacation time.

In February 2011, Miller conducted a nationwide CareerBuilder study of 5,600 U.S. workers, which found:

  • 24% of full-time workers say they can’t afford to take a vacation in 2011, up from 21% in 2010.
  • Another 12% can afford a vacation but don’t have plans to take one in 2011.
  • 30% reported they will contact their office while on vacation, up from 25 percent a year earlier.

So even if you are able to get away, you will be highly likely to check into work at some point during your vacation. What ever happened to your R&R?!

“‘Taking advantage of vacation or paid-time-off benefits is critical not only to employees’ well-being but to their overall job performance,’ said Rosemary Haefner, vice president of HR at CareerBuilder, a provider of recruitment support services. ‘Workers who set aside time for rest and relaxation tend to have less burnout, more creative energy and higher-quality output. While financial challenges and heavy workloads may make vacation planning difficult, it’s important to find time to recharge away or at home. It can ultimately translate into a more gratifying work experience.'”

During your break, do your best to stay far, far away from any technology if at all possible. If you do have to check in with work, be sure to create some boundaries. Set a certain time at which you will be available to be contacted, and spend the rest of your time relaxing and having fun. You deserve it!
